The International Airports Association ACI announced the TOP10 ranking of the world's busiest airports in 2020 on April 22, local time. The rankings are classified in terms of passenger volume, cargo volume, and aircraft takeoffs and landings. Affected by the epidemic, passenger traffic at the world's top ten busiest airports has dropped by 45.7% in 2020. Overall, passenger traffic at global airports fell by 64.6%.
It is worth noting that 7 of the top 10 airports for passenger traffic in 2020 are in China and 3 are in the United States.
Guangzhou Baiyun Airport ranks first in the world, and China's Hongqiao International Airport's ranking has risen from 46th in 2019 to 9th in 2020. The passenger flow of Chengdu Shuangliu was the most stable, with a decrease of only 27.1% compared with the previous year, followed by Shenzhen with 28.4%. Beijing Capital Airport was hit by the epidemic and the diversion of Daxing Airport, with passenger flow plummeting 65.5%.
This is a big leap in ranking for Chinese airports. According to the world's busiest airport data released by ACI in 2019, Chengdu Shuangliu Airport ranks 24, Shenzhen Baoan 26, Chongqing Jiangbei 48, Kunming Changshui 37, and Xi'an Xianyang 40.
ACI Director-General Luis Felipe de Oliveira said: “The impact of the epidemic on global passenger transport has caused the aviation industry to almost stagnate in 2020, and we continue to face existential threats. The data released today reveals that To overcome the challenges that airports continue to face, rebuild connectivity, and promote global economic recovery, this remains a top priority."
Air cargo volume was less affected by COVID-19, with a decrease of only 8.9%. In 2020, the air cargo volume of the world's top ten busy airports increased by 3%. This increase can be attributed to the increased demand for online consumer products, medicines and personal protective equipment. China has three airports on the list, namely Hong Kong Airport, Shanghai Pudong Airport and Taipei Taoyuan Airport.
In terms of aircraft flight volume, ACI data shows that there will be 58 million aircraft taking off and landing worldwide in 2020, a 43% drop from 2019.
